Stuttering

I am running mAirlist 4.2.1 build 1674. Everything works fine except after a longer period of time (2 days or more) stuttering appears during playout.

My configuration is Intel Core 2 DUO CPU E7500 @2,93 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 64-bit, internal soundcard, using DirectSound.

Any idea why this stuttering appears and how to avoid this?

Interesting. I’m running 4.2.1 as well. I’m not having any of these issues, even though my machine has been up for months. I know there were some issues on other machines because the power configurations of W7 were NOT set to an “always on” configuration. You might want to verify that the power settings of W7 are optimized.

I am quite sure the stuttering is NOT caused by mAirList. I suspect soundcard or windows setting >:(

I checked the power saving settings, where I have 3 options:

[ol][li]Balanced (recommended)[/li]
[li]Energy saving[/li]
[li]High Performance[/li][/ol]

Setting is now on “Balanced”. How do I turn this off completely?

Normally if you set it to “High Performance” any speedstep (like) technology should be disabled.
But I won’t recommend it. It should be OK for testing, but it will set CPU to maximum clock, so it will also cause higher temperature and your fan need to run faster for cooling.

I guess that the root cause is somewhere else, and you should prefere to solve the root cause.

Malte

The other poster may be correct that the problem is elsewhere. Even so, if mAirList is running 24/7, then the power setting should not be set to “balanced.” Change the power setting to a custom power plan, one that prevents the HD and other features from powering down. The plans are manually built. Here is the one I use:

Create a power plan
High Performance
Plan Name: mAirList
Turn off the display: Never
Put the computer to sleep: Never
Click Create
mAirList→ Change plan setting → Change advanced power settings.
mAirList→ Require a password on wakeup → Setting: No.
Hard Disk → Turn off Hard Disk after → Setting: Never.
USB Settings → USB Selective suspend setting → Setting: Disabled.
Power buttons and lid → sleep button action → Setting: Do Nothing.

Thanks, Malte and Alec M. I changed the power settings to “Alec’s mAirList Plan”.

I will monitor if the stuttering returns.

Thanks! Adriaan

Great! Please us know the results so that we all learn.

Stuttering is still there >:(

Not sure. Have you checked whether the computer’s “event viewer” is reporting any issues? Do you have other apps running at the same time as mAirList?

It sounds very much like something is updating in the background: is Windows Automatic Updates ON? If so, switch it OFF no matter how much Windows complains.

Also of course switch OFF updates of AV program, firewall, Adobe Reader, browser, etc., etc.

Thanks guys. Your thoughts highly appreciated.

Since I adjusted power plan, I have the feeling stuttering is almost gone. Since I can’t listen all day, check here:

http://www.broadcastretro.com/Media_Player.asx (Windows Media Player)

This PC is for play out mAirList only, no other apps running.

Uh huh. And did you actually check for any installed apps. (NOT just running apps.) trying to update themselves silently? Adobe Reader? AntiVirus? Firewall? Browser? Any app. from Google? To name just a few of the usual culprits. ::slight_smile: You didn’t tell us whether you did that or not.

Either way, I’m pleased that Alec’s power plan has improved things, and hopefully nailed your problem!

Cad, apps installed besides mAirList are:

[ul][li]Norton Internet Security: updates manually[/li]
[li]Google Chrome: updates turned off[/li]
[li]Breakaway Live: updates turned off[/li][/ul]

No other Adobe- or Google apps. In studio, I don’t hear stuttering at the moment anymore.

That’s good, and thanks for the feedback: it’s appreciated.

Oh: and are your Automatic Updates in Windows ON or OFF? That’s another one many people forget to switch off on playout PCs.

Off

Very good: thanks for letting us know!

That is fantastic news! I listened for a bit; all sounded good. Please let us know how this turns out.

Also, the power plan should have optimized the computer; however, I don’t know whether your computer has additional power adjustments in the BIOS and, if so, whether they were disabled by the power plan. If you do have them and they are causing problems, you may have to go into BIOS to adjust them.

**Finally, your stream sounds rather nice. Good job! The segues are nice and the audio levels are very consistent. If you don’t mind, please tell us your set-up/audio chain.

Thanks, Alec M. I attached a shot of my studio.

My vision is less is more. So not a very special set up. I use 2 PC’s: On PC1 Production machine I rip files & jingles and prepare them using Adobe Audition 3.0. All files are MP3, 320 kb/s, 44,1 kHZ. Files are transfered to PC2 Playout machine. Running mAirList 4.2.1 into soundprocessing Breakaway Live. Standard onboard soundcard. All files on PC2 are topped using MP3 GAIN, standard 89,0 db. Encoder is integrated encoder mAirList 128 kb/s.

Both machines are connected to a real - retro - broadcast mixer from D&R, Holland: D&R Aircom (1993!). Mostly I use mAirList for Automation 24 x7, now & then I run live assist and record voice tracks.

What I like most: the music  !

Looks good! Thanks for sharing…

Cheers, Alec!
