Process priority settings

Just wanted to get some clarification on what these settings actually do. I have it on normal in v4 usually, but if I were to set it to real time what is the difference between them?
Thanks.

Simple answer: don’t change this from ‘normal’ unless you have a real issue which requires it to be changed, and you have discussed it with Torben before you do so.

Changing the process priority of any application to ‘real-time’ is highly likely to near enough ‘lock out’ pretty much every other process on the PC, cause timeouts in background processes, and in extreme cases, lock you out of Task Manager and even prevent you rebooting the PC other than by physically pulling the power lead out. And yes, I’ve seen this done by someone trying to ‘speed up’ an application which wasn’t running fast enough in their opinion; and yes, I was the poor sod who had to somehow get them out of it!

Forget being able to run any other applications normally (web browser, e-mail, etc) or any auto-update process (for example, your anti-virus). Also forget being able to run anything time-critical in the background (like scheduled backups and even audio streaming); or indeed, any background process.

Are you scared enough yet? ;D

Seriously: I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave in the first paragraph.
