I’m new to using mAirlist (v. 3.1 I believe) and I’ve been planning on networking our playout PC (Windows XP) to an external PC (Windows 7) in order to access the database software remotely using PostgreSQL.
Neither of the computers can connect to the internet, and I was wondering the best way to network them using ethernet? Apologies if this is in the wrong section.
Hi,
We at hospital radio station Southern Sound in Glasgow have just recently installed
a dell poweredge server which contains all our audio database
which is then accessed on our studio pc’s also running Mairlist.
We bought our server on ebay at a good price, so I would
look at ebay where you will find such units.
We are very happy with our setup we now have, and the good thing is
that Mairlist works fine with this setup and plays the music no problem
Our production studio also has Mairlist and any music we put into the system is uploaded
from there.
You will no doubt know that you have, and will have to do tagging of all
your music so it will play correctly. The tagging is a very slow process.
Hope you find a dell poweredge server on ebay. Our studio pc’s do not connect to the
internet.
All the best, and hope tis info may help you.
You don’t actually need a separate server. All the client needs is access to
(a) the PostgreSQL server via its TCP port (networking must be enabled in postgresql.conf and pg_hba.conf),
(b) the audio folders, through a network share.
The PostgreSQL server can be installed on any PC reachable through the LAN; some people choose to run it on the playout PC. In this case, the clients will connect directly to the playout PC rather than a server.
