I tried to do this earlier today and found it didn’t seem to work.
The network file url being something like ftp://studio@ipaddress/directory/newsline.wav
This could be a nice added feature if possible to play over FTP

What exactly happened when you tried? Any error code?
Actually, this is what “network file” is meant for.
Hmm i’ve tried it as a Network File
using the URL eg. ftp://username:password@theflatfm.dyndns.org/NewsTalkZBNEWS/newsline.wav
I get error “Access violation at address 005D191”
Ideas?
Hm, can you try the following:
Open the item in the Properties dialog
Click the small Play button in the lower left corner.
This should give you the same error message, but this time in separate dialog with a “Details” button. Click that button and send a bug report. It will help me to identify the exact part of the code where the error happens.
Done and sent
Thanks, I’ll have a look.
Fixed in b1450.
The problem was that there was an extra “Audio File” tab in the Properties dialog (meant for later use) with a second “Filename” field, and whatever you entered on the “General” tab was overriden by that second Filename field, so the URL you entered wasn’t saved.
Additionally, an empty filename caused that Access Violation you saw. I have turned that into a more useful message.
Hmm I’ve tried it again and this time it does say the invalid syntax.
I noticed when I added in my url and clicked save, it changed it to
storage:///0/ftp://user:password@theflatfm.dyndns.org/NewsTalkZBNEWS/newsline.wav
Should this be able to interpret the “ftp://” at the beginning?
Try b1451 please.
Works now
I’ve realized unforunately my internet is rather slow and to broadcast the remote news feed I will need to first download via a scheduled FTP task on a 3rd party software the download to MP3 File.
Each hour the newsbeat.wav downloads and is placed in F:\News\newsbeat.wav
The duration of the file will change every hour, how would you suggest having this file added into MairlistDB? Would it be a Network file? I need to not remember any Cue Lengths etc… Any ideas?
My idea in the long run is that I would also maybe through IVP automate a backbeat behind the news file.
If the file name never changes (the file is overwritten each hour), just add the file as a regular file to mAirListDB (that is, add F:\News as a storage). Remember to disable Auto Cue, or delete all cue points, otherwise you end up with a Fade Out or Cue Out marker that will disrupt the news if a particular version of the file happens to be longer than the original file at the time you synchronized.
Personally, I’m not a fan of ‘beats’ under news bulletins.
On the BBC News Channel’s feedback show (Newswatch) recently, a number of teenagers commenting on BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat programme/bulletins also said they find beats or a bed under the news both annoying and distracting from the stories. And: would you still run ‘beats’ under a bulletin containing a tragic story like Wellington being nearly totalled by an earthquake?
