Dear mAirList community,
I’m glad to announce that mAirList 2.0, the latest stable production
version, has been released today. As a christmas gift to you, and also
to myself.
This release is somewhat special for me, as well as the entire year
2006. Throughout the last months, the public attention to this software
has constantly increased, and so have the ideas and requests for new
features, which kept me very very busy - however, in a positive way. I’m
always happy to implement new features, and thus, it was quite hard for
me to close the feature set for a while, concentrate on bug fixing and
say “well, this is mAirList 2.0”. I wasn’t able to include all of your
requests in this version, but mAirList 2.0 is nothing but a stable
snapshot, and development will go on.
The code of mAirList 2.0 is based on the final development version
1.5.56, with a few last minute bugfixes, and of course with the new
artwork built in. So, if you have been a regular lurker or active user
and know the latest 1.5.x versions - don’t expect any groundbreaking new
features. There aren’t any.
Here’s a few people I would like to thank:
-
First of all: Everybody from the Forum who provided bug reports,
suggested new features or just gave feedback. Although I’m sometimes not
able to reply instantly or fulfill your requests, I know that YOU are
the mainspring of mAirList. Keep it up! -
The beta test team, checking the final build for consistency and errors.
-
Hannes Lambert, who created the new mAirList logo and artwork, and
provided me new versions of the image files faster than I was able to
install them … -
Cad Delworth, Master of the Wiki Although we’re still at the very
beginning, the Wiki already provides very useful information, especially
given the fact that I haven’t managed to complete the official
documentation so far. However, every single member of the community is
asked to contribute to the Wiki, so go on and give Cad a hand. -
Christoph Krämer, for developing an urgently needed eldoDB
replacement. Though the future of radioDB is currently uncertain, I
think that it’s an essential step towards a future, full-featured,
official mAirList database. -
All of the commercial customers, providing an additional incentive for
future development. -
Last but not least, my wife Anne, who suffered me hanging around in
front of the computer all night
How will the development of mAirList go on?
“Traditionally”, I will take a few weeks off, cleaning up the code and
making some urgently needed internal modifications which are not worth
testing. Then, “public” development will continue with the upcoming
development release mAirList 2.1.
One thing I have learned from mAirList 2.0 ist that it’s not good to
make too many modifications and implement too many major new features at
the same time, because it gets hard to create a stable “snapshot” then.
I will therefore establish some sort of roadmap and rather take small
steps - a “one big change at a time” strategy, so to say.
Re-implementing the visual playlist component has a certain priority and
will be the first thing I will start to work on.
Merry Christmas to you, and a happy new year 2007, with many new
improvements and mAirList releases. I’m very much looking forward to it.
Torben
