Echo when Voicetracking

Hi I’m trying to voicetrack a show (first time I have used it on mAirList)
I’m getting a echo when talking can anyone give me some troubleshooting.

Most likely an audio setup issue (Mic Monitor goes to an output that loops back to Mic Input in a way).

I always get an echo then, my solution is close the fader for playback and open the faders for player a/ b and mic . when your done and want to listen back or use the mixeditor open the fader for playback

EDIT:

oops! I just saw that this thread is rather old so the original problem might be solved by now - anyhow, if someone else runs into this problem, the text below might include some pointers…

/EDIT

Hi, Sean,

I recently had a similar problem and although I am not sure how I actually solved it in the end, it’s gone now.

However, in the process of troubleshooting I learned a lot about voicetracking setups so maybe I can help you pinpoint your problem by guiding you to look at some areas that may be the source of your problem. To enable us (the community) to help, it would be nice to know a bit about your setup:

  • Which mAirlist version do you use?
  • do the echoes only occur in your headphone while you record or do they occur in the recorded voice track only or do you hear them while recording and they also end up in the recorded material?
  • does your recorded material (that means the recorded voice track) contain parts of the tracks you’re playing or do you record purely the sound of your mike? You can judge this by looking at the waveform: if you see a (mostly) flat line that only shows activity at the parts where you were actually speaking, that’s an indicator that no music (or whatever tracks you use for voicetracking) ends up on the recorded track. If you see a continuously active waveform, though, you may be recording the tracks A and / or B also whicht might indicate a problem in your signal routing. You can verify this more exactly by opening just your recorded voice track in an external editor (like Audacity, for example)
  • Torben already asked this: have you made sure the mike monitor (from the mAirlist voice tracking configuration page) signal doesn’t create a loop? Double check the routing of all of your signals.

To achieve the latter (double check signal routing) you may answer yourself (or the public ;-)) the following questions:

  • Do you use a (hardware) mixer? If yes, which model?
  • how are your Voicetracking channels (the two players and the recording channel for the mike) routed (i.e. which player uses which soundcard input / output and to which channels are they connected in your (hardware) mixer)?
  • is the mike monitor signal (mAirlist configuration, voicetracking settings) on (checkbox checked) or off (unchecked)? If it is checked: where does this signal go? Ist it possible that it ends up on the input again?
  • how do you listen to the material
    • a) while recording, i.e.: how are the faders set in your mixer and how do the signals end up in youe headphone / monitors (e.g. are you listening to a PFL channel on your mixer or do you listen to the main pgm output (sum))
    • b) while playing back (e.g. from the voice track editor)

Possibly there may be more questions to ask depending on your setup - as each setup is pretty individual there may be many possibilities to check. But without knowing anything about your setup it’s hard to figure out what may be going wrong.

Kind regards,

McCavity
