Cue-in, Cue-out settings...

Hello-

I’m wondering the cue-in and cue-out settings to “trim” (in effect) silence from the front and end of an audio file. I think it is -90, but that doesn’t seem to do the trick on all files. Is there an agreed upon level, or range, that is appropriate to accomplish this goal?

As always, thank you

The default setting is -200 dB which means “just above silence” and effectively trims all samples that are 0 (absolute silence).

Some tracks, especially when originating from an analog source, may have very low noise at the beginning that appears to be silence, but technically is not (because the sample values are greater than 0, although almost unhearable). In that case, you should increase the Auto Cue threshold.

I’m afraid you will have to make some tests to find a value that suits your needs best.

Many CD players cue-in at about -40 to -45dB… I have used -45dB with mAirList and found it to be quite acceptable.

… but the best method of all is to use a CD ripper like dbPowerAmp which removes all silence at start and end of files at the ripping stage.

Seriously though, I agree with Charlie: try -45 dB, and if that’s too ‘severe,’ try -60, -75, -90, …

Thank you all… I’ll start again at -45, see how that works, and adjust if necessary.

Alec: also make sure that you DO try tracks with a v-e-r-y l-o-n-g fade out. Those are the ones most likely to be ‘chopped off’ by too severe a value (i.e. too few dB!).
