Congratulations! I guess someone had to be first! Seriously though, that’s good to know.

It not only runs, it runs like a champ. No crashes, no freezeups, no anything going wrong, jut good 'ol mAirList doing it’s thing!! ;D

I just hope that Win7 is in general more Win2K-like than Vista-like. I can’t stand ‘Fisher Price’ GUIs like Vista or AppleMac, or OSs weighed down with stuff to ‘look cool’ or to perform stupid, pointless, time-wasting visual effects like fades, zooms, and scrolls.

Are you running a professional radio station Lil’ Matt? From the screenshot, it looks like you have mAirList playing the latest and greatest music. All the music looks fresh and is being played on the Top 40 / CHR formatted radio stations.
I don’t run any radio station, but love music and would like to enter a broadcast (radio/TV) related career in the future. mAirList is like a toy for me; I play “pretend” radio here on my computer when time permits.
I work at a professional radio station (Hot 97-3, KHDK Burlingotn, IA, USA), and procure (steal) my music from it, lol. We may start using mAirlist for our DJing service called Mobile Hot soon though.
The story of how I got the job is a unique one though…
I’m a high school Junior, a Sophomore when I got the job. I went on a job shadow for a class, and got a job offer, and now I do three weekend shows on Hot 97-3 and one of the other stations (Our owner has 6 stations, and his son has 2) Big Country 103.1. As well as a lot of fill-in shifts, and I helped to start Mobile Hot.
CAD, Win7 is VERY Vista like when it comes to the UI, but it runs like XP, it. is. so. FAST!!! I love it!

Don’t forget to obtain a commercial license first
Don’t worry… we will. ;D I’ll be very honest though, we did use mAirList at a free event just to try it out, and it was almost exactly what we needed. It doesn’t have beat mixing, but we’ll use it about every 234237 songs, lol.
Thanks for an awesome product
Matt
Oh spit.
Can most of the Vista-esque garbage be disabled? In other words: can it be made to look and work like Win2000 (like XP can) or not? If not, I think I’ll be staying on XP for a LONG time to come.

CAD,
You can disable the Aero UI, the effects, and you can even get it to look almost like windows 2000.

I was skeptical about Vista when I first saw it - but I was forced to learn it very quickly when our station’s playout PC went belly-up and was forced to use one of the pre-built Vista units that we had spare - The prep machine was Vista so I was used to the GUI but installing applications and getting around the security popups was fun
Cad - I run Vista Ultimate at home, I’ve disabled Aero as it speeds things up and Adobe Audition switches it off anyway. SP1 is a must, it relaxes many of the “stupid” security features (whilst still keeping the PC reasonably secure). Boot time on my 3.6GHz P4, 2GB RAM is quick, mainstream apps run reasonably fast but FlightGear (my guilty pleasure) is a bit slow.
As you may be aware, Vista’s audio handling is very different to XP - and if you find yourself running Microsoft’s audio drivers you may discover that you lose “Stereo Mix” from the Recording Options (even when you enable hidden devices). Update to your manufacturer’s latest drivers - this usually sorts it. My mobo has a 7.1 Realtek on-board plus an SB Audigy, both with the latest drivers and all Recording options are available. Its like buying a new car and opening the bonnet to find a spare wheel - they’ve put the engine at the back and it’s not in a layout that you’re familiar with! Caused me all sorts of problems when I set up a net station’s playout (not mAirList) as they had 1 soundcard for playout, the LineIn taking a local studio feed and AudioTX for remote link-ups - thus requiring the “Stereo Mix” as a recording option so that everything that the soundcard does is captured… Major PITA until you figure it all out!
For 24/7 use, I would say stick with XP if you have the choice but Vista is more than capable if you’re only going to run mAirList on it. Many (if not all) of the “big boys” are not presently supporting Vista, so there’s much to be said for the proven OS that doesn’t hog system resources! Phoenix FM have had mAirList running 24/7 (12am-7am auto) on since October 2007 without any hiccups except a regular reboot. mAirList reports a memory error in the StatusBar when loading hourly playlists after a significant amount of uptime (I suspect this is a Vista problem rather than a mAirList one!)
Hey Charlie,
I’m absolutely with you about Vista, it’s not that bad as everybody talks about it. I also don’t understand why so many people want a better and more innovative OS, but on the other hand talk that bad about any change and new thing Microsft releases. They have stolen again lots of stuff that is known from MAC OS or Linux, but that was what people missed. For example I really like the possibility, to siwtch to a root user only to perform a single task.
You shouldn’t use Vista with hardware that is much older than the releas of Vista. I bought a new laptopt, just after Vista was released. I would have been able to use the downgrade, to XP, but I have choosen to try Vista. The only problem I ran into, was the none existing Virus Scanner that time. I expected a lot more, but didn’t see any.
The company I work for is just downloading the official BETA of Winows 7, as we need to do some tests with our hardware. One collegue already hast it and found out, that it’s a bit faster than Vista. I guess the change would be a bit similar to the step from Win2000 to XP, with Windows ME in between.
I did some basic tests with mAirlist on Vista and didn’t run into any problem with it. I’m really looking forward to do a testdrive with Windows 7 BETA and mAirlist.
Cheers!
Malte
It’s true, Vista isn’t that bad. I think the user interface is much more friendly than in the previous Windows versions - it’s just that it’s so much different from the previous versions. We just need to get used to it. That’s my experience at least.
But there are so many annoyances. Most notably the “Vista knows better which view settings to use for this folder” one. I still wonder why it believes that some of my source code folders actually contain pictures and changes the colums to shutter, aperture etc.
Anyway, good to know that there haven’t been any problems with mAirList on Windows 7 so far. Keep the reports coming.
Have to add that I passionately loathe the Vista GUI.

I guess this is how the software vendors help the hardware manufacturers to sell their brand-new products…
But also don’t forget the impact of latest software technology like Java or .NET. It makes the development significally faster but introduces some overhead during runtime. A Java program is written in less time compared to an Assembler program, but it might execute slower. Very nice for the software developers who save time and money, but the end users have to pay for it
Just be careful: I heard that there is a bug in Win7 that may destroy MP3 files… don’t know details, it was on the radio.
Christoph
That’s correct, it was in build7000 - but there is now a fix for it and users are advised to upgrade. Essentially, the first few seconds of an MP3 are wiped subject to certain criteria (like having WMP fill in your metadata)… Nasty.
Be interesting to see who puts out a decent Java playout app, then we won’t have this battle of “my OS is bigger than yours”

So as I work for a company that is in the hardware business I should like it even more…

Our administrators downloaded x86 version now x64 still in progress. The funny thing is, that Microsoft sent me a newsltter today. telling me Windows 7 is ready for download…
I already wonderesd why there were 2 patches next to the ISO image, now I know.
I’ll let you know my general experiance, as I need to create a testreport anyway.
