V3 Install Question

Next week, I will be installing V3 on some brand-new PCs.

My question is this: which file should I use to install the program?

[ul][li]The 3.0-Professional-setup program, or[/li]
[li]the 3.0.9-setup program?[/li][/ul]

(After I’ve done that, I’ll copy the latest Snapshot and then my custom Config files.)

Thanks in advance!

They are almost the same. There’s only two differences:

  • The Pro setup comes with a 30-minute demo license file for Professional Edition included. The “plain” setup.exe does not come with a license file, but you will have to download and install one on your own.

  • The Pro setup includes the libpq74.dll file necessary to access the networked mAirListDB.

There aren’t any other differences at the time being. I’m planning to include useful “getting started” configuration files with each setup, but currently, neither of the setup files contains any config files (and the “plain” setup never will, because it is meant for upgrades and “from scratch” installations).

Thanks!

So, if I use the Pro setup, do I then copy my supplied licence.ini to overwrite the one included in the Pro setup? And after that, do I then need to do anything else (like, go into the Licence dialog to ‘install’ my actual licence file?).

In the most recent versions, there are three filenames mAirList considers when looking for a license, in the following order:

license.lic (in mAirList program folder)
defaultlicense.lic (in mAirList program folder)
license.ini (in config folder)

The latter version, although still working, is now discouraged. Just because, in particular in Professional Edition, each PC needs how own license, so it should be “bounded” to the installation rather than the configuration (which may be replicated to other PCs).

I also decided to change the file extension to “.lic” to make clear that this is not the same sort of file as the .ini files from the config folder. It’s still in ini file format though, and if you import a license.ini file with License Manager, it will just be copied to the new location using the new file extension.

The pre-configured packages come with “defaultlicense.lic” file which is used as a fallback when no personal “license.ini” file is found.

When using the Pro installation package with an existing license.ini file, you must either keep your old license.ini file in the config folder and remove the defautlicense.lic file (which has precedence over an existing license.ini), or copy your license.ini file to “license.lic” in the program folder, or use License Manager to download or import it.
