I’m running mAirlist on my 24/7 on desktop computer. I would like to be able to manage the database from a second computer (my laptop) for convenient editing.
What would be the best solution to accomplish this and can it be done with a Home license?
Access over the internet is not neccessary. MySQL is available if needed.
The best solution is to get a license with the Database options enabled. This is part of the Professional package which can be bought for home use with a huge discount.
Everything else you can do brings in a lot of ifs and whens, and you finally end up with problems you’d never have if you spent the money on the database upgrade.
However, the professional version is not available for home use.
I guess I’d need mAirList Advanced Server (Home) which includes mAirlistDB Server?
But… would the laptop need a second license?

We grant a home user discount on mAirList Professional Studio too; please contact sales@mairlist.com.
It’s not listed as a product we offer as a standard since it’s unusual for a “typical” home user.
However, to use it within your LAN, usually another Professional Studio license has to operate as a client.
There is a second possibility: We offer a so-called “Management License”, which is only for database access, not for playout. You can buy such a license, but there is no discount for home users.

There are a few things I would like to add to the earlier replies here.
Several people have asked me this question in the past. so that is why I like to reply in here
The question you asked for is ; ‘is it possible to run a database app on another pc in a network?’
As Uli already said it is possible. I would like to give u an example and explanation in how you could use it.
I am using a SQL database for mairlist myself. This database is installed on my first pc. This pc doesn’t even have a mairlist license installed! This pc is connected in a local network.
About my licenses;
First I do have a Mairlist Professional Studio license installed on my second pc. This licence is my main license, but this license is (in my case) only used as playout software and for dbserver. Dbserver is used when u want to contact the database over the internet. I know this is not what is asked for, but it is included in this license and I will excplain it some later. The database for this license is connected by the local network.
Then I do have a third pc wich contains a custom Mairlist database licence. When I was thinking about buying Mairlist I contacted Torben and he told me it was possible to buy a seperate custom database license. (Like Uli did in his reply on this question). This license only makes it possible to use the database app. So it is ideal for editing the database on a seperate pc. This database is also connected by the same local network.
Then I do have a laptop wich contains another database license. Since the db server is running on the pc wich has the professional license, it is possible to connect to my database on this laptop from wherever I am.
The database connection is over internet, very stable and fast. I often use this for making changes in my database.
Also it is possible to buy Add-ons for licenses. Both my database licenses are upgraded with the Voicetrack add-on. This makes it possible for me to do voicetracking wherever I am. It doesn’t mind if I am in my studio, or even on holiday. As long as I have my laptop with me, I can do voicetracking wherever I am.
In the time I bought my first Mairlist license there weren’t home editions available like they are nowadays. So I have bought this configuration by then. Also the home version didn’t had all functions wich I wanted to use. (Especially the database over network).
I can advice you to send an e-mail to Torben or Uli with your needs and wishes and I am sure they are pleased to see what they can do for you. Since the first contact I had, I was very pleased with the responses they gave me. Especially from Torben because I have had more contact with him back then.
What makes Mairlist so cool is that it is possible to configure just like you want to. Not just using standard packages to buy from. My licences were configured custom for my needs. Even when u bought a license and want to have an add-on lateron, it is possible.
Last thing I like to add is a small comment on the reply of ssnoopy. My radio station is a hobby for me, and I am using the professional licenses, so I am 100% sure that professional licenses are also availavle for ‘home users’.
As far as I know you are able to connect to a SQL database within a home license, but the home license doesn’t allow you to setup a networked database. You should need another license for creating such a database. U can use user roles when using a SQL database, so every license wich is connected to the database can have other functions and limitations.
I hope my reply gave you some information about the possibilities in using Mairlist over a network and even the internet.
