Is there a way that we can automatically check the database for errors or that the songs are no longer linked to the relevant audio file e.g. by a red and a green dot in front of the relevant song

I have no idea concerning the whole database, but you can check a playlist on errors (playlist or database). The same is possible for a complete day or a week via the calendar icon in the database/playlist section.
However, you can drag&drop a complete (virtual) folder in a playlist (you don’t need to save this playlist) and start an error check. 
If you scan for new items,in the right kolom there are the missing items
